Art Journaling With Kelly Kilmer This September

It’s that time of year again…the time when our beloved Kelly Kilmer comes to Fort Collins and shares with us her wonderful ideas and techniques for art journaling. She’ll be here September 12-15, 2019.

I’m especially excited about this visit for two reasons:

  1. We’re adding a 5th class this year, on Thursday evening, September 12. This is for those of you who have busy weekends planned already or who can’t get away from work on Friday to take those classes.
  2. I recently returned from an art experience in France, which was led by Kelly. She has even more cool ideas and techniques than before! I swear, I don’t know how she does it.

So, meander on over to the Kelly page on this site and see what’s coming up. It’s going to be fantastic.

Art Journaling Workshops With Kelly Kilmer To Be Held September 12-15 in Fort Collins, CO

Updated 6/3/19

Kelly Kilmer is back this September with four new art journaling workshops. Take one class or take them all — you will have a great time making art with old and new friends, learning techniques that will inspire you and also inform your work in other disciplines. See the slideshow below for photos of class samples.

The workshops will be held September 12-15 at Art Lab. You can see all of the information about the workshops by going HERE and clicking on the name of the workshop to get the details and supply lists.

A Few Rules

  • Seats will go on sale Sunday, June 23.
  • Discounted seats come with early bird registration, but that ends August 1. No exceptions!
  • You can pay a deposit to hold your seat, but all balances are due September 1. No exceptions!
  • Final signups must be in by September 1 as well. No exceptions!
  • There will be no refunds. Once you buy the class, or put down your deposit, the seat is yours to do with as you wish. You can sell your class or transfer your seat to someone else, but those responsibilities are all yours once you buy a class. (Think of it as if you’re buying a concert ticket. The Pepsi Center doesn’t buy back your tickets if you change your mind, right?)

Are These Workshops for Me?

Are you new to art journaling? That’s ok! Kelly’s classes are geared to all levels.

Don’t think you have the right supplies? Kelly is well known for her inability to travel light and supplies a lot of the tools you’ll be using in her workshops — collage materials, bookmaking supplies, paint and more. We’ll bind our own books in some of her classes, in other classes you’ll bring your own journal or paper from home to work in.

Have you been art journaling for years? Trust me, Kelly will will inspire you to think in ways you haven’t thought before.

Join us this fall for a fun and inspiring weekend of art making, laughter and friendship. Sign up today!

ARTIST TIPS SERIES: Kelly Kilmer

Kelly says this is her number one tip for working in art journals:

Something that I have found to be helpful to me is to take photos of in-progress pages. I don’t always have the time to finish a page nor do I always know the direction that I want to go in. When it gets to the point where I need to walk away, I’ll take a work in progress (WIP) photo. I also will leave my book open. This allows me to see my work as I periodically walk by it throughout the course of the he day. Taking photos allows me to revisit the work and remember what it looks like (so far.) It is also a great way to document any changes.

Sign up for Kelly Kilmer workshops in Fort Collins, CO, April 28-30!

Bonus art journaling goodies for YOU!

kk-messytable1Kelly and I are wrapping up the final details on her long-awaited visit to NoCo and we had an idea. You see, Kelly always brings a ton of supplies to these workshops — papers, pens, collage items, ink, paint, stamps, stencils and more. She has to prepare each student’s kit before she hits the road and make sure she has enough stuff for everyone. As for me, well, I need to buy enough chocolate for you all (there will be other treats, too, but the chocolate is really the most important bit, don’t you think?) and do some other preparations.

Short story? It would help us out greatly to have an idea of who’s attending the workshops. Also, I need to pay the CCC their rent for the room. 🙂  To that end, we offer you…

The Great Incentive

Sign up for any of Kelly’s workshops and Kelly will give you a bonus Arty Goodie Pack at class. You must register between now and midnight (MDT) on July 31. If you know Kelly and her grab bags/boxes, you know that this is going to be some good stuff and you won’t want to miss out.

In addition, anyone who attends any of Kelly’s workshops (including those who have already registered) will be entered into a raffle each day for some outstanding goodies that I have in my own studio. I’ve got a multitude of art books, stencils and so much collage fodder, your eyes will bug out. To be a part of this drawing, you must be registered by August 10.

Have a great day!

And, of course, how to have a LOT of fun with your fellow journalers! In the words of one of Kelly’s biggest fans:

I am so excited about Kelly Kilmer coming back to this area to teach classes again. I was new to mixed media and art journaling when I took my first class with her. She taught me easy techniques that I still use over and over. I keep coming back to her classes, because she always has fresh and new journal-making classes … her students get a lot of personal attention … she is so down-to-earth … and she is one of the few artists I know that teach the art of collage and design. I am no longer an art newbie, but keep returning to Kelly’s classes, because it stress-free fun and she continues to challenge students of all levels. So excited about welcoming her back to Colorado! (KC)

If that’s not enough, email me and ask your questions!

Q+A with Kelly Kilmer

New feature: A little Q+A with the instructors. Let us know what you think!

If someone took one of your workshops and had never art journaled before, what would you tell her before she began?

Art journaling is for everyone, males and females of all ages and stages. Art journaling is your place to play, experiment, question, explore and just be creative. It can be about the words, the images, the playfulness, but in the end, it should be about the process and the journey.

You’re a favorite of our local mixed media artists and have been here numerous times — What’s your favorite thing about teaching in Northern Colorado?

The students and the location!!! I LOVE my Colorado students. I always look forward to trekking and teaching there.

When you visit NoCo, do you have any special shops where you like to stop in and browse?

I usually am in and out but I’m looking forward to visiting Blue Twig Studios [Ed. note: This shop is in Colorado Springs.]. Last year I stopped at (I can’t think of the name of that paper store in Boulder that I loved) and would love to go back there some time! I’m usually too busy teaching to do much shopping though Fort Collins does have a great Barnes and Noble with magazines I rarely see elsewhere.

What should a new-to-you artist expect from one of your workshops?

Lots of new techniques and ideas that can be applied to any art form! You will walk out with your head spinning with new ideas and a desire to keep creating.

Of the four workshops you’re teaching this July, which is your favorite? Which do you predict will be our favorite?

I love them all for different reasons. I try to make each class unique and different. I loved working and making each one.

Do you have any surprises in store? Can you give us a hint?

We’ll be digging deep and learning a variety of new techniques and ideas in each class. I’m bringing new toys and I guarantee that not only will you learn a lot but you’ll laugh and have a great time.

How do you differentiate your work from that of other art journaling instructors?

My work is very personal. I take what I’m doing very seriously and I strongly believe that everyone is creative in some form. If I can do this, so can you. I am very passionate about what I do and how I teach.

Do you still have the first piece of art you ever made? What do you think when you look at it?

Every piece of art represents possibility and a journey. I keep all of my journals and even have my very first ones.

What’s your favorite word?

I asked my son, Tristan, and he said, LOVE. I think he’s right!

Thank you, Kelly! We can’t wait to see you next month!

Kelly Kilmer – booked for July 2015!

It’s very exciting! Kelly Kilmer is on the 2015 calendar! We don’t know yet what workshops she’ll be teaching, but if you are a fan of Kelly’s, you’ll want to pencil (or Souffle, or Glaze, or Gelly Roll, or Sharpie…) her in for July 17-18-19, 2015. Be sure to tell your friends and make sure you’re on the newsletter mailing list, so you’ll get updates as they are released.
